Has Paul Gascoigne lost his job or his identity?

Recent press stories about ex-England footballer, Paul Gascoigne, and his slide into mental illness, demonstrate well how an apparent loss of identity can lead to such negative effect.

Whilst few would argue that Gascoigne’s health issues are entirely due to the end of his sporting career, it could be reasonably argued that the loss of his job will undoubtedly have fuelled other, more latent, psychological factors and patterns of behaviour.

At Pinnacle Therapy, we often work with clients who struggle to come to terms with certain life changing events that are often beyond their control such as redundancy or loss of a career.

It may be that negative, potentially destructive thoughts have simply gained control over the underlying positive strengths.

A significant part of our therapeutic work involves helping the individual to re-visit their core values, skills and talents. In so doing, new potential outlets are frequently discovered; utilising qualities that already exist and have merely been unearthed.

Once an individual gains a better insight into their situation the positives begin to take control over the negatives.

Gascoigne’s perceived loss of identity is not just a self-indulgence reserved for celebs and VIP’s but could happen to anyone.

Emotions do not have to reach such a deep level of despair, as those experienced by Paul Gascoigne, in order for someone to seek help. The time to begin correcting symptoms is when early warning signs appear.
