Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy was originally developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorders, including experiences of war. EMDR is used by counsellors and psychotherapists to help people with trauma that has occurred in personal lives or in professional lives.
EMDR Therapy can be a very powerful treatment for people who have experienced trauma or traumas such as –
- Violence
- Natural disasters
- Accidents
- Abuse
- Neglect in childhood
- Surgery
- Performance anxiety
EMDR Therapy can also treat children to cope with trauma and crises.
The EMDR Therapist stimulates both the left and right sides of the brain, using a range of techniques including hand movements, alternating lights or vibrating sensors, while the client recalls the event that is the cause of the trauma or traumas.
The effect of EMDR is similar to Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, during which the brain makes sense of the day’s events, reprocessing the memory and releasing negative emotions and associations.
Our approach to EMDR Therapy
We take an holistic approach when treating trauma and traumas – so that each client receives what therapy works best for them. When clients come to us for help with trauma, we always recommend that we discuss the options first so we can reach a joint decision about what would be most effective.
With EMDR Therapy, it is important that the client understands the symptoms of trauma, learns how to come to terms with the trauma and in time manage the associated feelings of trauma.
Some trauma issues are more deep-rooted than others. And some are more complex than they seem at first. We are flexible and will recommend changes to any agreed programme if we think that would be better for you.
It is likely that we will advise EMDR Therapy or Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for trauma.
Whatever we agree, our service is confidential and discreet. We never disclose the names of our clients or talk about them to third parties. Although we have included on this website comments from clients, none of them includes the client’s full name or exact location.
With EMDR Therapy, private one-to-one counselling is what happens. We are experienced in treating clients who have suffered trauma in their personal lives or in their professional lives in the armed forces, or public services such as transport and from the emergency services. For children, one-to-one counselling may be recommended or counselling with a parent present.
If you would like to find out if we could help you, we invite you to contact us.

believe it could work for me, but I gave it a try. You were wonderful! I'm deeply grateful."
